7 Reasons Why People Don’t Stick To Their New Year Resolutions

Business Concept - 2014 ObjectivesHappy New Year! Have you made New Year’s resolutions? Are you going to stick to them? Thought this would be a useful post given it’s the 1st Jan. I believe the reason people don’t stick to their New Year resolutions is because they don’t focus on the pleasure of the outcome they’re trying to achieve, rather the pain of the process. According to peak performance coach, Tony Robbins, we human beings are motivated by pain and pleasure – then need to avoid pain and the desire to gain pleasure. If you set a New Year resolution such as to quit smoking, you subconsciously associate pain to that as you regard it as a sacrifice, depriving yourself of something you enjoy. We don’t like pain, so it rarely lasts! But when you focus on having a set of lungs that will enable you to be much fitter, full of energy, vibrancy, your skin will look better, you’ll live longer, you’ll slow down ageing, you won’t stink, your sex life will improve as you’ll have more stamina etc – you’ll have a far greater change of success! You’ve got to give yourself a big enough “why” which is what this first point is all about… [Read more…]

The Importance Of Spending Time With Winners

Spend Time With WinnersThe original title of this was ‘Stop Spending Time With Toxic People’ but it sounded a little harsh for 2 days after Christmas! It is also a subject very close to home so to speak. As we move into the New Year, I think it’s something really worth thinking about if you’re setting up a business or striving for something that people close to you cannot relate to. It’s challenging enough building a business without the psychological challenges brought on as a result of conflicts and/or toxic input from people close to you. We become who we spend out time with so get out there and spend time with encouraging people in 2014!  And check out this great article from Entrepreneur.com of course.. [Read more…]

Forget Setting Goals And Focus On The Process?

Forget Goal Setting And Focus on The SystemNow this goes against most things I’ve read about and implemented about but thought I’d feature it anyway. It’s controversial as I’m a big believer in setting goals but the author, James Clear, makes some very valid points on some potential negative effects of goal setting. I think the main reason people fail with New Years’ Resolutions (for example) is that they focus on the process and not on the end goal and the emotional reasons for achieving that end goal. Using the weight loss example of the last post, of we only focus on going to the gym (yawn), or running or cycling or whatever it is we do, it’s easy to lose motivation – unless we make that process fun I guess. Some great points are made here, so do check them out.. [Read more…]

10 Ways To Focus in 2014

What Is Your Mission? Need I say it, 2014 is fast approaching. Do you ever feel that the older you get the faster time passes by? I’m certainly feeling like that! This is one reason I believe it’s so important to remain focused towards our new goals, one at a time until we succeed. As we prepare for the New Year, we’ll be thinking about new goals, what we want to achieve, how we’ll achieve them and more importantly, why we want to achieve them. That last point is probably the number one reason why most people fail with their New Year’s resolutions – they focus on the process/obstacles rather than their reason for their desired outcome and how they’ll feel on accomplishing said goal. 7 Ways To Better Manage Your Email

EmailIn this day and age, email has become a necessity for business and it would seem, personal purposes. However, it has also become one of, if not the biggest, time killers of all time. A while ago I featured a post called How To Increase Productivity Instantly and in the number 2 spot I suggested only checking your emails twice a day, never first thing, say an hour before lunch and an hour before the end of your working day. The rest of the time your email client is closed. I came across this a few years ago when i read Tim Ferris’ The Four Hour Work Week. A lot of emails we read and reply to don’t really require our time and affect our productivity in a big way. [Read more…]

Is Managing Your Time A Waste Of Time?

Time ManagementIs managing your time a waste of time? Controversial title I hear you say. This is an intriguing article from Entrepreneur.com where Steve Tobac looks at some of the myths associated with ‘time management’. In my top ten tips for effective time management, you’ll have seen that I came across the idea that ‘time management’ is a misdemeanour because one thing in life that we really can’t manage, is time. It’s given to us, and is our most precious commodity. It cannot be replaced. We can, however, manage ourselves, and more importantly, our focus. [Read more…]

10 Things To Know About Setting Goals For Yourself

Power of Goal SettingIf you’ve perused the categories of this site at all, you’ll have seen many posts under Goal Setting. It’s because it’s one of the main tools to help us focus and take the reigns of our lives so to speak, rather than by living on someone else’s terms. When we set goals in each area of our lives, whether they be for our body, finances, relationships or spirituality they create a destination for which to head. If we do not have a destination to head for, then how on earth will we get there? It would be like getting into a car with a friend and for them to say to you “where to?” and for you to say “no idea, just drive”.  There is a technique to goal setting though. We can set ourselves up for failure if we’re not careful – and it’s often by setting unrealistic goals or by being too ambiguous. Here are 10 things to know about setting goals for yourself from Psychology Today. [Read more…]

Five Organising Myths

five organising mythsWe’ve all heard that the way we organise our possessions and particularly our workspace is a direct reflection of the state of our minds. Or maybe you haven’t? If we have clutter all over the house and a non-existent filing system, the chances are, that there are other areas in your life that require a little organisation – and attention. Focus and productivity are affected by how well we’re organised. Did you know that if you have piles of paper for example on your desk, that it sends messages to your subconscious mind that there are other tasks that need to be completed so you can’t fully focus on the task in hand?
